Baldur’s Gate is one of the largest and most prosperous cities on the Sword Coast, situated on the River Chionthar south of Waterdeep along the Trade Way. It is a major commercial hub, known for its powerful merchant class and lively (if sometimes corrupt) politics.
The city is divided into the Upper City (noble estates and manors), the Lower City (docks, markets, taverns), and the sprawling Outer City beyond the walls. Power is held by the Council of Four dukes and the Flaming Fist mercenary company, which serves as the city’s de facto military.
