One of the most ancient of Faerûn’s deities. People in Faerûn consider the moon to literally be the god gazing down on the world, and the trailing motes of light behind it — the Tears of Selûne — to be her tears. She is also a god of stars, navigation, and motherhood.

She appears as a woman of varying ages, sometimes changing before an onlooker’s gaze as the moon transitions through its cycle. In any form she emits a silvery-blue glow.

Selûne is venerated by navigators, sailors, those who work at night, those seeking protection in the dark, the lost, and the questing. Lycanthropes are said to be blessed by her. Rites include trances, meditation, and setting a bowl of milk outside on each night of the full moon.

Her eternal conflict with her twin sister Shar defines her character. The principal legend recounts their battle at the beginning of time, which gave rise to the Tears of Selûne.

A mural depicting the creation of Selûne and Shar was found decorating the first room of the Luminous Cloud Citadel’s upper tower.
