The Temple of Shattered Minds is the ruined ziggurat deep in the northern salt marsh of the Border Mire. Built long ago by an exile elven cult that abandoned spirit-worship, the temple was later forgotten — until Karahl-Guhl and his thralls took refuge there.
Karahl-Guhl used the temple to hold captives and perform psychic experiments, breaking minds and creating thralls. The Seekers mounted a rescue and confronted the illithid in the temple’s crumbling halls, freeing some prisoners and ending much of the illithid’s immediate threat.
Notable figures associated with the temple
- Karahl-Guhl — the illithid who made the ziggurat his lair. His mind, damaged by grief after his companion Zaxab was slain, was the source of the hostage crisis in Alkai Tor.
- Thonot — a psychic quaggoth who managed to free herself from Karahl-Guhl’s domination thanks to latent psychic talent. Thonot provided key intelligence to the Seekers and now has a tenuous alliance with Mystic Howling-Gale.
History The ziggurat predates the recent events by centuries. Its creators were an elven sect who valued knowledge and reason; over time their order collapsed and the temple fell into ruin and use by other creatures.
