Overview

Karahl-Guhl was an exiled mind flayer whose mind was irrevocably damaged after the death of his companion Zaxab. Consumed by grief and vengeance, he and his small band of thralls terrorised the lands around Alkai Tor in 1486 DR, abducting villagers and using a ruined ziggurat in the Border Mire — the Temple of Shattered Minds — as his lair.

Background

Karahl-Guhl and Zaxab were once powerful members of their illithid enclave in the Underdark. Their close psychic bond — an intimate connection illithids found unsettling — led to their exile. Fleeing through the Underdark and surfacing in the Border Mire, they arrived with only a few dozen thralls: several kuo-toa, a handful of quaggoths, and an umber hulk.

During a skirmish with defenders of Alkai Tor, Zaxab was slain. The loss blasted Karahl-Guhl’s mind; his psychic faculties were fractured and he became driven by a single, burning need for vengeance against those he blamed.

The Campaign Against Alkai Tor

After Zaxab’s death Karahl-Guhl retreated to a ruined ziggurat deep in the salt marsh. From there he launched raids on Alkai Tor and nearby settlements, using thralls to abduct villagers (notably Mystic Howling-Gale and Elder Rolling-Thunder) and bringing them to the ziggurat for experimentation and psychic manipulation.

Karahl-Guhl’s methods were cruel and systematic. He used his thralls to capture and deliver victims, and he performed psychic procedures intended to break minds and create obedient servants. Survivors described him as methodical and sadistic — a being that felt emotions intensely, especially glee at the torment of others.

Thralls & Allies

  • Kuo-toa: Fanatical, fishlike thralls used as shock troops.
  • Quaggoths: Hulking, savage servants used for brute force.
  • Umber hulk: A powerful burrowing creature kept as a personal pet and guardian.
  • Hags (coven beneath the lake): Agents that received information from thralls within Alkai Tor, and who aided Karahl-Guhl’s plans until his defeat.

Key Events & Fate

  • Karahl-Guhl’s thralls carried out night raids and kidnappings across Alkai Tor and Bog Town.
  • The Seekers investigated the disappearances, discovered the ziggurat, and confronted Karahl-Guhl.
  • In the ensuing conflicts Karahl-Guhl killed Nog (Ougigoth Togak) of the Seekers. Karahl-Guhl was ultimately slain by Willow Devonshire during the rescue at the ziggurat.

Aftermath

With Karahl-Guhl’s death and the dismantling of his operations, many thralls were freed or scattered. Some, like the psychic quaggoth Thonot, recovered enough sense to cooperate with local allies. The ziggurat remains a dangerous ruin, its halls stained by the psychic experiments once conducted there.
